Why? They are very beautiful. I would never deny that. I wouldn't ignore the truth they carry. But I think I have fully absorbed the truth of much of what happened in China- although I didn't experience it (and I think I am grateful for that). I think one can absorb truth, as opposed to wallowing in it. There is a distinction there for me. At some point wallowing in pain (however beautiful) becomes masochism. That doesn't mean you pretend it doesn't exist, ignore it, or make up stories about it- so I fail to understand your "surprise".
