THe film is being met with very mixed reviews from the "experts" also, so I don't think we can say with any degree of assurance that a film background is the requisite for enjoyment. I'm going to let my thoughts run a second here- as this is crossing my mind and I think I'm going to retract what I said earlier in a way---Sophocles and Shakespeare were extremely popular in their times, appealing to all. We need the background of their ages to appreciate them because the culture and the myths and techniques are unfamiliar. That's not something we should need for Kubrick, who is speaking directly to us in our own time. Should modern work be accessible to ordinary people regardless of whether they understand cinematic theory or not? If only a few can admire what is presented because it is so full of obscure symbolism and confusing surrealistic sequences, does that change how we evaluate it? Just wondering.
