Perhaps she should be more concerned that one of zdnet's (Mitch Ratcliffe's) favorite y2k writers implies that it is somehow manageable to build a FIRE in a house or an apartment.

>>>However, in doing contingency planning, think about capitalizing on the skills you have and staying clear of situations requiring skills you do not have. Take fleeing to a farm or country home for a nice long January "vacation," for example. If you've never dealt with a septic tank or water that doesn't come out of a pipe, then you're as out of place as a ranch hand in a 16th-floor Manhattan flat.

How many people know how to percolate coffee on an open fire? How many people know how to make a fire inside a house or apartment that has no fireplace without burning the house down? How many people know how to use a sterno cooking stove or a camp stove with one or two burners? How many people know how to hunt, skin and butcher an animal?
<<< Howard Belasco

I love it...Don't go to the country where you might have to deal with well and septic he advises...you'll be confused, "out of place," (you don't know how to kill wild animals!)...then imply that most people are idiots and so few of us can manage basic camping style skills...and then confuse the entire discussion by suggesting there's a safe way to build a fire in a house or an apartment...(causing you to wonder, "Is that is true?"...but Howard just thinks too stupid to figure it out?)...as though burning down the structure was the main concern (as opposed to death due to smoke inhalation?)

This man is dangerous...At least he gave up the "block and tackle" solution for people in high rise apartments with utility failures and no elevator service.

"flatsville"--who grew up in a three-bedroom log cabin and knows there's no "safe" method of building a fire in an enclosed structure without a properly designed and ventilated fireplace or woodstove.
