Drbes, Maybe Paul does know something about gateway's disappearance

Just got this off Forbes, if true, it appears intc is ready to sacrifice profits despite the warnings from Gwennap:

"Intel's aggressive efforts to keep AMD out of contention are illustrated by the effort spent on wooing back Gateway (nyse: GTW) into the Intel fold and preventing the direct order PC maker from launching products with Athlon chip.

According to sources familiar with AMD and Gateway, the latter was all set to launch systems with Athlons, but decided about two weeks ago to back away from the product. When asked by Forbes.com to explain why this happened, Gateway spokesman Kent Hollenbeck says, "It was a pure business decision.

In other words, Intel offered deep discount to Gateway. A soft dollar deal, and steep discounts on 600 MHz Pentium III chips, helped Intel kick AMD Athlons out of Gateway machines. The whole package is rumored to be worth around $20 million."

makes you wonder if they pulled the same stunt with HP, seems their amd offerings are almost nil these days. Cpq and Ibm must be thrilled.
