I know what you mean. But if something is universally beautiful- I think everyone can appreciate it (when in the right mood). A Vermeer, or Rembrandt I think anyone can appreciate, when they are in the mood to look at art- but what about, for example, Alexander Calder? I don't think so. SO the art which everyone in the right frame of mind can appreciate I think is just art. The art you have to be educated to appreciate is high art and some of it, the faddy stuff that no one would like unless it was hip to like it because it is so awful, is just dreck.

I think all art is judged by everyone- and its level of acceptance selects it's category. We will have to wait a while to see what the shakeout will be for Kubrick's last movie.
