Re : Lucent and Aris go way back

On the Aris web page is news about an agreement between Lucent and Aris back in April of 98. Nothing too earthshattering, but nice to see that they know each other. JAM

Lucent Technologies and ARIS Technologies Establish Cooperative Marketing Agreement for Video and Audio Watermark Technologies

MURRAY HILL, N.J. and CAMBRIDGE, M###. -- Lucent Technologies and ARIS Technologies have entered into an agreement to cooperatively market each other's digital watermarking technologies. The technologies -- Lucent's MediaTraX? and ARIS Technologies' MediaCode? and MusiCode? -- enable over-the-air, cable, and satellite broadcasters, as well as Internet audio and video Webcasters, to embed copyright and other information to help identify program material. Broadcasters, advertising agencies, and motion picture and recording companies use watermarking to both monitor and protect their work.

Under the agreement, Lucent and ARIS Technologies have the right to market and promote all of the products collectively as well as individually. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"The demand for robust watermarking systems will increase greatly as the Internet and other forms of digital media expand," said David Leibowitz, ARIS Technologies vice-chairman. "Moreover, the advertising industry's need for ad placement verification is greater today than ever before, and record companies and music publishers are very concerned about unauthorized use of copyrighted material on the Internet. We believe that, by working together with Lucent, we can provide better, low-cost solutions for these growing needs."

Both Lucent's MediaTraX and ARIS Technologies' MediaCode and MusiCode embed identifying information directly into the content. These low-cost techniques do not compromise the video or audio quality.

MediaTraX is a video insertion technology that enables information to be embedded in both analog and digital broadcast and cable systems. For example, advertisers can use this type of information to reliably track when a particular advertisement aired, on which channel, and in which market.

MediaCode and MusiCode are audio watermarking technologies that embed information across all transmission media and physical formats. With MediaCode and MusiCode, information is embedded on an audio track which can be perceived in a variety of media formats, including CD, DVD, or cassette, as well as radio, television, cable, satellite, or Internet transmission.

"Intellectual property in the digital domain is extremely vulnerable to piracy," said Ed Cartier, marketing manager for Lucent's Software Solutions Group. "Given the market need, and the synergies between both companies' technologies, Lucent and ARIS believe that it is in their best interests to cooperatively market new watermarking solutions."

ARIS recently announced an agreement with SESAC, a performing rights organization, to employ MusiCode to identify and track musical performances. The agreement extends across all SESAC affiliated music, including such previously hard-to-track media as music libraries.
