Sierra Wireless introduces AirCombo 350
Sierra Wireless Inc SW Shares issued 14,216,395 1999-08-09 close $13.75 Tuesday Aug 10 1999 Mr. Rick Freeman reports At APCO 99, Sierra Wireless has introduced a new wireless data system that delivers both portability and power -- the AirCombo 350. This solution is designed to give mobile users the flexibility to use their laptops for wireless data access using the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network in the most demanding conditions and the confidence to have cellular access even in remote cellular coverage areas. The AirCombo consists of two new Sierra Wireless products, the AirCard 350 and the AirBooster 350. Each product brings unique features to the AirCombo wireless solution. The AirCard 350 is a true type II PC card wireless wide-area network interface card (NIC) for notebooks supporting Windows 95, 98, or NT. The AirBooster 350 is a vehicle-mounted power amplifier that increases the AirCard 350's output power from 600 megawatts to a full three watts. This high-performance combination gives users of wireless data more flexibility than ever before. The AirCombo 350 provides reliable access to various information resources while travelling in a vehicle, yet offers users the benefit of being able to remove their notebook from the car for remote communications right at the job site or incident scene. In the vehicle, if users approach the limits of cellular coverage and risk losing communications, the AirBooster provides the power to maintain continuous cellular coverage. An added feature is an integrated GPS receiver option, built right into the booster. "We have been an avid user of the AirCard," said McKinley Boutte, information systems at Jacksonville Fire and Rescue. "It has proven to be a key enabler for enhanced field productivity and safety. With the addition of the new AirCombo 350, we are looking to give our field officers new levels of continuous cellular coverage and the portability of using laptops at incident scenes." "Our new combo couples the performance and reliable communications our customers demand, with the flexibility to be portable when necessary," said Rick Freeman, product manager for Sierra Wireless. "And the many features of the combo such as internal GPS, and automatic antenna switching, make the AirCombo 350 the most powerful wireless data system currently available." AirCard 350 for Windows The AirCard 350 is a true type II PC card and wide-area network interface card (NIC) that operates on notebooks running Windows 95/98/NT. Having a wireless network interface card rather than a modem means automatic cellular data connection upon power up of your laptop and automatic reconnection after suspend and resume. There are no more manual steps required to register on the wireless network. The AirCard 350 also offers a new robust, removable antenna ideal for transportation and storage convenience. Power management is key for mobile computing devices. Consequently, the AirCard 350 uses leading-edge power-saving techniques to enable laptops to use the network interface card with minimal effect on battery life. The AirCard 350 is backed by a three-year warranty. AirBooster 350 The AirBooster is designed to boost the radio frequency signals of Sierra Wireless 600-megawatt wireless modems and network interface cards to three-watt-output capability. Complemented by useful features that include an integrated GPS option, rugged MIL specification design, and a three-year warranty, the AirBooster gives the mobile user the confidence and convenience of continuous access to mission-critical information.
