Mr. Chet Idziszek reports
The company has released new diamond indicator mineral results from the Calling Lake target area on the Calling Lake and Varlaam properties in Northern Alberta.
Twelve of Gurney's G10 garnets have now been recovered from the Calling Lake target area. One sample in particular, 9803S, produced 159 pyrope garnets (pyropes) of which 10 are G10 pyropes, one of which has yielded exceptional chemistry with less than 1 wt per cent CaO and greater than 10 wt per cent Cr2O3. According to Gurney (1984), the extreme chromium rich and sub-calcic nature of this type of G10 pyrope garnet has great exploration significance since its composition is typical of G10 garnets recovered from high-grade diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes with a large proportion of peridotitic (garnet harzburgite) diamonds.
The company's previous news release reported that three beach sediment samples collected from the Calling Lake target area in late 1998 had produced an extraordinary quantity of heavy mineral concentrate. The samples were collected from three separate sample sites, one kilometre apart, along the southwest shore of Calling Lake and 10 kilometres northwest of sample 9803S. The Saskatchewan Research Council has completed picking the silicate portion of the heavy mineral concentrate from these samples and has identified over 300 pyropes in two of the samples and approximately 90 in the third sample. All three samples contain chrome diopside. SRC is currently conducting microprobe analyses on all of the pyrope garnets. The company and its diamond exploration consultants agree that, in addition to the variety of previously reported diamond indicator minerals recovered, the exceptional chemistry and quantity of pyropes observed in the Calling Lake target area is a result of the erosion of a diamond bearing kimberlitic source either within or directly adjacent to Calling Lake.
The company is pleased to announce that on April 19, 1999, Terraquest Ltd. commenced flying an airborne magnetic survey on the Varlaam property. The majority of the Calling Lake target area lies within the Varlaam property and the identification of any significant magnetic anomalies within the Calling Lake target area will immediately become high priority drill targets. It is anticipated that complete results from the Varlaam airborne geophysical survey will not be available until June 1999.
Diamond indicator mineral results are pending for the recently completed overburden auger-sampling program on the Calling Lake and Varlaam properties. Once results of the auger program have been received and evaluated, the company will determine the type and amount of follow up exploration required prior to diamond drilling potential kimberlite targets.
The Calling Lake and Varlaam properties are contiguous and cover approximately 177,000 hectares. The company owns a 100 per cent interest in the Calling Lake property and has an option from New Claymore Resources Ltd. to acquire up to a 70 per cent interest in the Varlaam property.
