It's Official, Men And Women Aren't Equal
By Radha Thomas
Last week, two TV shows 'The Practice and 'Ally McBeal' touched on an issue supposedly important for women. Gender equality.
Since I am a woman, I already know what's most important for me. And it's not equality of the sexes. It's money. Lots of it with the least amount of effort. After money comes fame. Again lots of it with little or no effort. The way I see it, once I have money and fame, I can very easily get whatever else it is I want.
What is gender equality anyway? Men and women aren't equal. We weren't engineered that way. That's why men get to work at logging, putting out fires, lifting refrigerators and being on top during sex. Physically challenging jobs that women will quit in a minute because the payoff isn't worth the effort .
That's why men get to call the shots. Because they are stronger and bigger, mostly. But there are ways to deal with strong, big men bursting with testosterone and huge egos without having to take them to court.
Take the issue of sexual harassment. I for one don't get it.
A friend summarised SH very nicely. "I was busy scrambling up the corporate ladder while my boss was busy looking up my skirt." She could have sued him, but instead she smiled happily at him. "Oh goody," she said. "I've been dying to have sex with someone. You see, I have this horrible disease that causes huge boils on male genitalia. No one has come near me for years. Come into my arms, you big bear." Needless to say, he ran.
Of course rape is a completely different issue. There, a woman is as vulnerable to a man as a child is to a paedophile, or cockroach is to an exterminator.
Equality in the workplace appears to be a hot topic for women, especially since the Supreme Court gave women the go-ahead to demand promotions and such... if they could prove that lust-filled men were holding them back.
To tell you the truth, if I were boss (and I'm not), I wouldn't hire a woman. Unless I could guarantee her at least 5 days off every month (besides weekends); a work schedule that ensured she would be home before dark no matter what the work pressure; understand that she can't come to work on time because buses, cars, autos never present themselves before her in the morning; give her plenty of leeway for long telephone calls and tons of time off for crying jags and mood swings.
I wouldn't hire a woman for the lingering fear that she will suddenly take off to get married or have a baby... and she won't give me the courtesy of a warning. I won't hire a woman because her children are always sick.
I'm truly fed up of women whining about equality of the sexes when what they actually want are extra privileges. The way I look at it, there's a lot to be said for being honest about it.
Women are great at prioritising and organising. They are quick, intelligent and efficient. They are not given to posturing as much as men, which actually saves time. They can zero in on a problem and grab it with both hands. They can function on several levels all at the same time. They are capable of lateral thinking.
And they're cute to boot. I honestly feel that all these assets could offset PMS. So instead of snivelling about sexual discrimination, it's time women came to grips with the fact that men and women will never be equal.
