Bob, Most places in Europe have a per minute connection fee for ordinary phone access. The phone company kicks back from the 5 cent a minute fee enough to pay the ISP. Let us say you are on line for 2 hours per day=120 Minutes at 5 cents per minute= $6 per day x 30 days = $180 per month for 2 hours per day. These fees are the mani reason internet useage is microscopic compared to Canada/US. Most people work off line, say making a post to SI, and then go online to dump the post and get the next and then go offline. This allows fewer modems to carry the load and in Europe 1 modem per 25-30 subscribers is enough, here we need at least 1 modem for 10 subscribers.
If any of you have an Brit/Eur friends ask them about this.
