[Call-Net Enterprises Inc. Takes First Step Towards Bidding for Broadband Wireless Spectrum To Be Auctioned Off by Industry Canada]

TORONTO, Aug. 10 /CNW-PRN/ - Call-Net Enterprises Inc. formally announced, on August 6, 1999, its interest in participating in Industry Canada's auction of broadband wireless spectrum in 24 GHz and 38 GHz frequency bands. In filing its application with the Industry Canada, Call-Net is seeking authorized bidder status as defined by the auction process. Call-Net views broadband wireless as a cost-effective component for providing last-mile, high-capacity connectivity for a diverse group of customers. The auction is scheduled to take place in October.

''We welcome the opportunity of bidding for the new wireless spectrum to be awarded,'' declared Juri Koor, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Call-Net Enterprises Inc. ''Adding wireless technology to our current infrastructure is consistent with our strategy of becoming a fully integrated telecommunications company. It is a complementary distribution system which helps expand our current addressable market and deliver value-added products and services to commercial customers.''

Earlier this summer, Industry Canada issued notice that it would hold an auction for licenses in the 24 GHz and 38GHz frequency bands. These frequencies will allow for the provision of high-speed data and Internet connectivity to users. The formal bidding process will be open to all authorized bidders who will have complied with minimum requirements established by the rules issued by the Department.

''Currently available point-to-point technology makes it possible to bring quality products to customers at highly competitive rates. We intend to bid aggressively, within the limits of our business plan, and are confident that we can obtain licenses in all major Canadian urban markets we are targeting,'' concluded Mr. Koor.

Call-Net Enterprises Inc. is a rapidly growing, publicly owned Canadian telecommunications company offering local and long distance voice, data and online services nationwide, principally through its Canadian marketing arm, Sprint Canada Inc. The Company also owns and operates an extensive North American network and has operations in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Common Shares and Class B Non-Voting shares of Call-Net Enterprises Inc. trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange and Montreal Exchange under the symbols CN and CN.B respectively. The Class B Non Voting shares also trade on the NASDAQ stock market under the symbol CNEBF.
