Yup. I've heard those who argued that it was probably one of the key events that launched Europe on a growth spurt that allowed to roar past the more staid development in the Moslem, Indian and Chinese cultures. Prior to that Europe trailed badly and was pretty much a back water. Talk about creative destruction.
