If the simple solution of providing a poster's button and a filtering mechanism has unfortunate consequences, maybe there's a more complex solution that would provide similar results and even more utility.

I think that's the case. The solution involves the most requested (and promised) feature upgrade and another item that's been requested recently. They are:

1. Advanced searching.
1a. Saved Searches
2. Ability to read any list as a thread.

Item 1 has been discussed here and in the "What's Next" topic for months. If it were available, it would allow a reader to search the current topic with a syntax like [NOT CONTAINS "OT "] or (in AltaVista-style) [-"OT "]. That would filter out many off-topic posts. The filter could be made more complex as necessary for a particular thread (e.g. [-"OT " -"OT/*" ] or [ -"OT" +"OTC" ]).

If you could save the query and list all saved queries in a format similar to SubjectMarks, you would be able to see a list of messages that more closely match what you're expecting of a thread.

But, by itself, such a list is awkward since you have to click on each message and then go back to the list to read the next one. That's where item 2 comes in. It was mentioned here in regard to the list of posts by a particular person. The request was to be able to read all messages in that list as though they were a thread.

That's a great idea. It would be even better if one could apply that kind of thread-reading to any list generated within SI.

A side benefit of this combination of features is that one could have a much more intelligent "ignore poster" feature, since one could build a filter for a topic that would ignore a certain poster only when a certain phrase is mentioned. (e.g. [NOT (user-XXXX AND "beaver dam"] would filter out only those posts in which the guy talks about the critters in his back 40).
