Do you seriously think the USA should have "normal relations" with a country bent on stealing our secrets concerning WMD?
Hmmmm..... do Israel, Russia, and France count???
Am I the only person on this thread to see how shallow the thinking is that compares espionage about WMD with attempts to intercept fax messages? Are those two indistinguishable in your mind? Gad, what kind of muddle passes for thought around here!
Well, I guess you might just be.
Considering that we used SIGINT/ELINT to eavesdrop on rocket telemetry, the phone calls of national leadership to friends, families, and rivals, all of which in total can create a very interesting base for determining broad trends on capabilities and intentions.
All of that WMD data was on a government computer system which is little different a medium of information exchange than a fax machine. Just discussing such information over a non-secure line is a security risk.
We should be particularly concerned when despotic nations like the Peoples Republic of China steal our secrets about weapons of mass destruction.
We should more worried about the Chinese, instead of a Kleptocratic regime of local power brokers and mafia bosses who are in control of some 30,000 nuclear weapons in Russia??
Well... Okay... I feel better now.
Btw, have you conveniently forgotten the principle of Mutally Assured Destruction where if they make us glow, we make them glow even more??
Nations seek nuclear weapons because they believe it is their ultimate guarantee they will not be physically attacked. But with those weapons comes a whole new level of global politics and responsibilities.
Israel's theft of US nuclear secrets, and alledgedly US processed Uranium is a prime example of that guarantee from external threats.
However, internal threats are a different question. Or even mucking around in places like Serbia in hopes of forcing western nations into action. (Don't believe that China was innocent in supporting Milosevic. It is rumoured that his wife and the Chinese Ambassador to Serbia are good buddies).

Ron
