Researcher says flat panel display revenue to surge 31% this year

Global sales of flat panel displays will jump 31% this year to an estimated $16.9 billion, according to the latest forecast from Stanford Resources Inc., San Jose, Calif.

The growth follows a nearly $1 billion drop in FPD revenue last year due to plunging flat panel prices, according to the SRI report. The market so far this year has flip-flopped into a shortage situation, with a corresponding increase in prices.

Unit shipments for all types and sizes of panels will reach 2.3 billion in 1999 and increase to 2.9 billion in 2005, SRI predicted. At the same time, global flat-panel market sales will surge to almost $35 billion.

The report stated that notebook PCs will continue to comprise the largest portion of the FPD market until 2003, when desktop monitor sales will overtake sales of portable PCs. SRI projected that flat-panel monitor sales will grow from $2.3 billion this year to $12.1 billion in 2003.

Paul Semenza, an SRI analyst, said organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are among the fastest growing segment of the FPD industry and will mushroom from a mere $3 million this year to an estimated $717 million in 2005.
