About "Is Netware an application server"

Salah's post was pretty complete. However the perspective might be changed just a bit.

The client visual interface on IntranetWare for applications will end up being the browser. Yes indeed the browser is the front end. It replaces the Windows visual interface. IntranetWare will never be sold as a workstation. NT will remain a workstation product.

IntranetWare does not need a robust developer's environment, in the sense of UNIX on a workstation, or C++ etc. on a PC.

IntranetWare needs a JAVA virtual machine. The inexperienced programmers will use the visual tools such as SUns to put together JAVA programs from precoded objects, just as they do now with all sorts of personal databases and object oriented PC programming tools.

Companies such as Corel will write whatthey have to to make their applications work in a JAVA environment.

PC operating systems are already invisible to the average user. All the average user sees is the visual interface or in MSFT terms the program manager. With customers and even MSFT shifting to the browser interface (and that is what Netscape has to continue to make happen) then noone will care what their PC is running so long as it looks to them like a browser interfeace and runs the apps (however coded) that they like.

Once upon a time long ago I coded in BLISS, the language in which DEC wrote all of its compilers. Did anyone care what language the compilers were coded in? In fact only the machine seemed to care. Ditto NLM's and intranetWare.
