The attention can be fun, sometimes. It's always nice to talk to the people who live by the river and spend a lot of time in and on it. On that river we met a lot of guys who spent their days moving logs downstream, and who paddle on it constantly in dugouts. There's always a lot to talk about with other river-people. They are always fiercely curious about the kayaks and how they work. It's hard to explain it, but when they see the spray skirt go on there is always a considerable expression of understanding, and when they see a roll they get the point right away. They also got a huge kick out of watching us surf and play in the rapid they consider the nastiest on the river (I wouldn't go near it in their boats). It would be fun to teach some of them to paddle kayaks; they would do it well.

The shallow lake with the wild rice sounds wonderful; I grew up beside a lake with a wide expanse of shallow water; used to pole around in a small rowboat and catch bass and pickerel. No wild rice, but I'd have harvested plenty if there had been any.

My own daily paddles are on a bay which is really pretty pedestrian, except for the odd occasional dolphin or sea turtle moments. Not many of those lately; the wind is usually pretty stiff, and the water choppy. The wildlife is still there, I guess, but harder to see.

Is the water there still low?
