Compaq sees India '99 notebook sales grow 34 pct

BANGALORE, India, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The Indian subsidiary of U.S. Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ - news) expects unit sales of its portable computers to grow about 34 percent in 1999, a senior company official said on Wednesday.

Companq's business products director Kapil Jain told Reuters he expected the company would maintain its first half growth of 34 percent in the second half of 1999 as well.

``I think we should be able to sustain the 34 percent unit sales growth we witnessed in the first half of the year over the first half of 1998,' Kapil Jain, products business director of Compaq India, told Reuters.

Jain did not give details of unit sales growth but said Compaq had the largest market share -- 27 percent -- of India's portable computer market of 24,000 units a year.

``The market for notebooks is not very large and is still evolving,' Jain said at the launch of a range of notebook computers.

He said buyers were mainly global businesses, Indian companies, consultants and financial institutions.

The resolution of the country's uncertain political situation could boost demand, Jain said.

``Buying by corporates might increase once the post-election scenario in the country is clear,' he added.

Parliamentary elections in India are scheduled for September and October.
