>>SAN JOSE -- Online auction company eBay Inc. has hired Gateway Inc.'s chief information officer to be its new technology executive and help end a series of debilitating computer failures.

Maynard Webb, 43, will lead eBay's other recently hired technology executives: chief technology officer Mark Ryan, previously of IBM, and chief information officer Bob Quinn, formerly of Sun Microsystems.

At Gateway, Webb worked on expanding the e-commerce operations of the nation's No. 2 computer maker. As eBay Technologies president, Webb will report directly to eBay CEO Meg Whitman.

"We are confident that he possesses the vision and hands-on experience to help ensure eBay's site stability moving forward and to help scale eBay's system for the future," Whitman said in announcing his appointment on Monday.

EBay's site went down again Sunday for nearly three hours when credit card processing failed. The site crashed for nearly 10 hours Friday and for nearly 24 consecutive hours in June. <<
