While I'll agree that the idea of England selling gold because they have a lot of tungsten(or whatever it was - I don't remember) is ridiculous, transmutation is a reality.

It has happened. Scientists, using particle accelerators, have been able to bombard lead with neutrons and transmute small amounts into gold.

Now, since the cost of actually doing this is thousands of times the worth of the gold created, it really isn't very cost effective.
