MCI Network Problem Cripples Some ATMs, Data Services
... The problem at the No. 2 U.S. long-distance carrier began late last week during a system upgrade and has disrupted high-speed data service for nearly 30 percent of MCI's global data network customers, spokeswoman Linda Laughlin said Tuesday.
MCI was upgrading network software from Lucent Technologies Inc., a former AT&T Corp. subsidiary, when the system began experiencing problems in large cities such as New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
As a result, ATMs nationwide - and in some cases outside the United States - had intermittent trouble dispensing money because the bank machines couldn't communicate with each other, making it impossible to determine the customer's balance ...
Chicago Board of Trade president Thomas Donovan issued a stinging rebuke of MCI after the disruption shut down electronic trading terminals across the globe ...
``Despite these assurances, we [Chicago Board of Trade] began experiencing a catastrophic outage because of MCI WorldCom just two days later,' Donovan said in a letter sent Tuesday to members of the world's largest futures exchange.

I'm not implying that this MCI failure was caused directly or indirectly because of Y2K. Because none of us really knows. Even if failures are Y2K related, IMHO companies wouldn't want to make that public. Especially a publicly-traded company, who's stock price could be negatively impacted if there were concern regarding Y2K compliance and/or remediation.
I've been having problems with my MCI billing. Instead of charging me 5 or 10 cents/minute. They've been charging me 43-52 cents per minute. A call to my mom that should have been about $6.50, was $43!!
It's been a real hassle trying to get this straightened out. MCI's computer shows that I've made only one call since April. But when U.S. West pulls up my account on their computer, they've verified that my account is indeed with MCI, and they have a record of all calls. They can see all of my MCI calls on their screen. But, MCI can't. Weird, huh? I have to send MCI hard copies of my phone bills, with that little MCI logo on top.
Ron, didn't you have problems with using an ATM machine last week? I know 2 people on Y2K threads mentioned it last week. Maybe this was the problem.
