IS the whole durn country politicized?

Savannah Morning News

Concerned lawyers and judges are working to remove some of the
tarnish that has attached itself to the legal profession. Letting
President Clinton address the American Bar Association on Monday didn't
help.

Less than two weeks ago, Chief Judge Susan Webber Wright of the
federal court in Arkansas fined Mr. Clinton $90,000 for perjury and
obstruction of justice in connection with the Paula Jones suit. The
judge also said the president ''undermined the integrity of the judicial
system'' and referred his conduct to the disbarment committee in his
home state.

And none of this bothers the ABA, whose stated mission is to promote
throughout the nation the administration of justice and uphold the honor
of the profession of law? This is like inviting Dr. Kevorkian to speak
to a convention of hospice directors.

Actually, Mr. Clinton's appearance confirms the politicization of the ABA. In 1973, the group condemned President Nixon, another lawyer,
during the then-ongoing Watergate inquiry. The group was troubled by
news reports about Mr. Nixon's involvement, saying they ''cast
aspersions upon the integrity of the profession.''

That was the right call. But Mr. Nixon was a Republican. Mr. Clinton
is a Democrat whose pals include some ABA leaders. As far as
professionalism and the ABA is concerned, the case is closed.
