Bitstream Inc. Announces Licensing Agreement With
Lotus Development Corporation

Lotus Will Incorporate Bitstream's T2K Technology in Teamware Solution Development

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1999--Bitstream Inc. (Nasdaq:BITS - news) announced today that
they have licensed their T2K multiple format font-rendering technology to Lotus Development Corporation, an independent
subsidiary of IBM, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bitstream's T2K was chosen to fulfill Lotus' needs for rendering TrueType
fonts in QuickPlace, a Lotus Teamware solution. The T2K license is available to Lotus for future software development.

''We are very pleased with the quality of T2K, and its applicability to QuickPlace's development objectives,'' said Steve
Brand, general manager of Lotus' Teamware Solutions Group. ''By capitalizing on Bitstream's expertise with regards to font
technologies, we can serve Lotus QuickPlace's customers today with a reliable solution for efficient font-rendering.''

T2K is a high-performance font engine software component that is independent of the processor and operating system. T2K
provides high-quality font rendering in any format, and is suitable for virtually any device, from the smallest embedded systems
to the largest multi-threaded systems. T2K offers superior quality, speed, low code size and extreme font compression, as well
as support for industry standard font formats.

''We are very pleased that our acquisition of Type Solutions last year has yielded relationships with key development partners
like Lotus,'' said Paul Trevithick, President of Bitstream. ''This license agreement reaffirms our position as a leader in
font-rendering technology, and we look forward to exploring additional opportunities for T2K with other software solution
providers.''

The T2K technology was acquired by Bitstream in December of 1998, as part of the acquisition of Type Solutions, Inc. The
founder, and creator of T2K and TrueType, Saampo Kaasila, is currently the director of research and development at
Bitstream.
