Text of my letter of resignation:

August 10, 1999

Mr. Robert A. Stein
Executive Director
American Bar Association
750 N. Lake Shore Drive
Chicago, IL 60611

Re: Resignation

Dear Mr. Stein:

This letter is to inform you that I am resigning my membership in the American Bar Association in disgust because of the ABA's leadership decision to have President William J. Clinton appear as the keynote speaker at the annual convention.

It is one of the purposes of the ABA to help to improve the image of the legal system and lawyers in the eyes of the general public. Inviting an individual to speak who has been found by a court to have attempted to subvert the judicial process and to deny another individual her due process and a full and fair hearing is just incomprehensibly inconsistent with such a goal. The court which sanctioned Mr. Clinton to the tune of $90,000.00 found that Mr. Clinton gave intentionally false testimony in the Jones case and also allowed affidavits containing clear falsehoods to be admitted into evidence. The fact that Mr. Clinton is a lawyer and our President who took an oath to defend and uphold our Constitution and faithfully execute the laws of our country just makes the fact of his transgressions all the more egregious. It also makes the fact of his invitation by the ABA leadership as a keynote speaker all the more reprehensible since it is an insult to all those lawyers who do respect and uphold the traditional notions of fair play and due process in the courts around this nation. I can not and will not voluntarily associate with an organization which could countenance this appearance by an individual with such obvious contempt for the law and our legal system.

Please refund my membership dues that were paid to the American Bar Association on June 30, 1999.

Thank you in advance for your immediate attention to this matter.

Very Truly Yours,

John L. Allen, Esq.

JLA/tad
