It was certainly not my intent to imply an "enemy of my enemy" policy with regard to China and India.

Rather, it is more the US exercising its considerable economic influence to support and invest in those nations who more closely share our interests and political perspective. I just don't understand why India has been ignored in favor of China. Both are equally lucrative markets for US products, and vice-versa.

China has been a very tumultuous nation whose past has been torn between conflicting warlords and colonial aspirations, and ultimately the ideology of Mao. This has resulted in an inordinate amount of societal paranoia which need not exist and actually inhibits their economic growth.

I'll never truly understand why Bejing has placed so much political emphasis on creating confrontation with Taiwan as opposed to focusing on their economic growth and political openess to the point where it only would make sense for Taiwan to desire to come back under the control of the mainland.

It's not like Taiwanese politicians would be able to exert any tremendous control over the mainland to any greater effect than exists from Hong Kong. But the Taiwanese business and mangerial know-how would prove indispensible to transitioning China into a major economic power.

I just believe there is too much ancient animosity between the ruling elite in both Bejing and Taipei and some younger, more pragmatic leadership is necessary in both capitals. Leaders who can get past this ideological and personal disdain shown by their elder "statesmen".

Regards,

Ron
