Once Coppermine is released with a 133 MHz memory bus + RAMBUS memory interface, I am sure we will see a performance increase that will put it ahead in the Mhz/MHz performance comparison. Until Intel does, I agree that AMD has the perforamce lead.

On a contrarian view, Intel may have delayed introduction of the new processors, as it could continue charging top $ for the current generation. It knows that AMD will only produce a "million" chips this half, and therefore on the market share front it will not be a threat. Intel therefore does not cut the price of its high end - allowing AMD to make some $$, but Intel maintaining a 90% market share makes a lot more.

When AMD starts to ramp up production and potentially become a market share threat, Intel releases the new processor that outperform Athlon (albeit not by wide margins), and cuts the price on the PIII. AMD will be forced to cut the K7 price as it is now associated as a PIII competitor - Intel claiming the PIV is a new generation. AMD takes another kit like it did with the Celeron previously, and Intel never had to overextend its manufacturing (maintaining high yields all the way through this scenario)

just speculation of course but we have seen it before.
