AAPT is owned by Telecom New Zealand which recently announced their intention to develop a cdmaOne network in NZ to start service in 2001 [I bet they bring that forwards because Vodafone is getting most of the customers]. Telecom New Zealand obviously wants to create an Australasian cdmaOne service.

From the look of that announcement it seems that Leap has not in fact done anything about installing hardware so is just selling spectrum rights and maybe some office leases and paperclips. They claim to have tripled their OzPhone investment.

Okay, that's a good deal since Leap doesn't seem to me to have any special reason to be in Australia when they have their hands full in USA etc. If their marketing strategy involves the Cricket Plan, that might be sufficient reason to back away from Australia where they presumably can't offer such a service.

I'll be interested to see if they line up to compete on 2GHz in New Zealand.
