Trade and Environment un.org International Cooperation to Accelerate Sustainable Development in Developing Countries and Related Domestic Policies is the subject of Chapter 2 of Agenda 21. The Chapter states that, in order "to meet the challenges of environment and development, States have decided to establish a new global partnership. This partnership commits all States to engage in a continuous and constructive dialogue, inspired by the need to achieve a more efficient and equitable world economy, keeping in view the increasing interdependence of the community of nations and that sustainable development should become a priority item on the agenda of the international community." It recognizes that economic policies, both of individual countries and in international relations, have great relevance to sustainable development. A supportive external economic environment is crucial. The international economy should therefore provide a supportive international climate for achieving environment and development goals through the following: (1) promoting sustainable development through trade liberalization; (2) making trade and environment mutually supportive; (3) providing adequate financial resources to developing countries and dealing with international debt; and (4) encouraging macroeconomic policies conducive to environment and development. Trade and environment were discussed at the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth session of the Commission. Within the framework of the Commission's multi-year programme of work, this issue will again be discussed at the eighth session of the CSD as one of the major cross-sectoral themes.
