Plastic encased hard drives. Not the resident expert, but my first thought is EMI (electromagnetic interference). Plastic doesn't do anything to shield it, metal the opposite. Nowadays, equipment makers look for all components that go into a PC or server, e.g., to have their own regulatory marks indicating compliance. Makes their compliance job a ton easier. I'd be leery of plastic. Maybe the DD folks have to do something drastic to achieve some profit margin. Tony Wait, edit: went back and read it again...sounds like they're working on making the media, or disk, rather than the drive, out of plastic. But can you store data on plastic? Maybe plastic over metal? Why did I touch this one?? :-
