PARIS (CBS.MW) -- France Telecom SA said Thursday its
consolidated revenues for the first half of 1999 rose 9.2 percent boosted
by strong growth in mobile phone and international business.

France Telecom's (FTE: news, msgs) first half
revenue rose to $13.8 billion (12.98 billion euros)
from $12.57 billion (11.8 billion euros) in the first
six months of 1998.

The French giant said its mobile
telecommunications revenue soared 43.4 percent to
$2.48 billion (15.3 billion French francs) from
$1.73 billion (10.7 billion francs).

The company said the bulk of this growth came
from its Itineris GSM cellular service, which added
3 million subscribers in the past 12 months to reach
a total of 6.9 million customers at the end of June.

France Telecom said Itineris' share of the French
market held firm at 49.2 percent while Itineris
revenues rose 53.9 percent to 1.7 billion euros.

The telecoms giant said its revenue from
international business also shot-up. It rose 41.2
percent to 8.89 billion francs from 6.3 billion francs. France Telecom said
this growth was mainly from the development of fixed-line activities. The
group now has 1.6 million lines outside France, 783,000 of which are run
by its Spanish subsidiary Uni2.

The company's wireless business outside its home country now has 2.3
million subscribers through subsidiaries, which it says is an increase of
nearly 50 percent.

France Telecoms fixed-line revenues rose 3.5 percent to 47.9 billion
francs from 46.3 billion francs.

In Paris trading, the telecommunications giants shares ascended 0.95
euro, or 1.5 percent, to 65.15.
