CORRECTED - RESEARCH ALERT-Merrill starts PC makers

-- In a research note, Fortuna also said he assumed coverage from Merrill analyst Steve Milunovich of Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news) with a neutral rating, a downgrade from the prior accumulate rating.

- For Dell, the Merrill analyst said he was cautious on the stock intermediate term, but gave the stock a buy rating for the long-term.

-- ``Despite Dell's rich opportunity set and superior positioning, we believe the stock's valuation could fall victim to the difficult times that lie ahead for the industry,' he said.

-- He set earnings estimates for Dell of $0.75 per share for the fiscal year ending in January 2000 and $0.95 per share for fiscal 2001. The previous Dell First Call consensus for fiscal 2000 was $0.72 per share and $0.98 for fiscal 2001.
