Les I think you missed the thrust of my arguement. I mostly was talking from the pov of the occasional innocent death penalty victim. We know this happens (and has happened a lot in the pre-civil rights south), although not often. Nonetheless those that support the death penalty accept this as a consequence of the "greater good" served. So they are willing to make an exception where an innocent life is sacrificed. So, applying this rationale to abortion, there should be no issue with the rape, incest etc. problem that routinely comes up, even for those that believe the fetus is a life. And yet there is! This dufus we had running for gov in California who is a "tough on crime" death penalty guy has a position of no abortions ever. (he suffered a miserable defeat, of course). Lets take it a step further to assault weapons. We know what assault weapons do, they destroy life. Some of those lives might be bad guys but some are good. So, if "life" in its purest form is truly the concern of the anti-choice crowd (and not control, return to the 50s, etc), then these same people would advocate removal of assault weapons from society, right? Using the "life is sacred" philosophy. Another massive contradiction from these people.
My family once told me that in the early 60s when you adopted a kid you knew you were going to get the very top or the very bottom of society. As far as the very top ones are concerned, I consider them to be victims of men that agressively pursue them for sex, based on my observations and what I recall of life as a 19 or 20 year old. Men are agressive persuers of attractive women at that age for sex and this includes telling them lies, date rape and all kinds of "macho" behavior that is tolerated in our society for 20 year old males. Some of the more naive women fall for this and once in a while somebody gets pregnant... not by choice. I refuse to condemn somebody in this situation, but if I had to make a selection it would be the boys and not the girls I would blame. |
