From the article: Novell Inc.'s GroupWise is not immune, either. When Novell, Orem, Utah, and Netscape Communications Corp., Mountain View, Calif., disclosed plans to launch a joint venture to move SuiteSpot to IntranetWare, analysts wondered what fate awaited GroupWise, which competes with SuiteSpot in some areas.
Products resulting from the joint venture-to be called Novonyx-will move through Novell's channel. But they will not be on Novell's price list, and "that's a big difference," said Stewart Nelson, Novell's vice president of applications.
Nelson told CRN that Novonyx could be an outlet for tried-and-true GroupWise technologies, such as calendaring, scheduling and discussion threading, as well as upcoming technologies like the Jefferson Project, which will ease movement of legacy information onto the Web.
techweb.com ----------------------- April 01, 1997, Issue: 804 Beware the Vendor Agenda -- If you've heard any of these myths, don't believe 'em. Windows Magazine
From the article: Myth 6: Novell is dog meat. Reports of Novell's death have also been greatly exaggerated. When people see Windows NT Server with three-digit projected growth every year for the foreseeable future, they assume NetWare will lose and die. In fact, there's a huge demand for NetWare as a bona fide network operating system that securely links entire enterprises with its global directory and administration features. Novell expects 8 million servers to be running NetWare by the year 2000, twice the current number. NT also has a role as a server operating system, dishing out applications and acting as the server for large departments. The two will live side by side and serve different purposes.
techweb.com ----------------------- April 01, 1997, Issue: 804 NT's Poor Balancing Act Windows Magazine techweb.com ----------------------- March 31, 1997, Issue: 729 These Executives Are On The Hot Seat Computer Reseller News
From the article: Eric Schmidt, Novell's new chairman and chief executive, is now a member of an illustrious club:executives on the hot seat. He joins a growing list of corporate managers who find themselves at the helm of companies that are in trouble, on the verge of turnarounds or facing extinction.
Eric Schmidt:A newcomer to the turnaround game, Schmidt left the cozy confines of Sun Microsystems to take the reins at Novell, a fairly risky proposition considering the myriad of jobs he could have taken. His arrival at Novell hardly budged the stock, but served as a shot of adrenaline through the entire NetWare channel. We'll see if Schmidt is as good a manager as he is a technical visionary.
techweb.com ----------------------- April 01, 1997, Issue: 804 Heard in the Back Office -- The latest scuttlebutt in the NT industry Windows Magazine
From the article: Spicy situation: Novell has stopped using "Tabasco" as the code name for a forthcoming NDS/NT Domain integration tool. It seems Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce maker McIlhenny Co. threatened a dash of legal action.
techweb.com ----------------------- April 01, 1997, Issue: 804 NT Tidbits Windows Magazine
From the article: Microsoft is crowing about a study that declared Exchange Server "easier to use" than Lotus Domino and Netscape Mail Server. But be sure to read the fine print: Microsoft sponsored the study, and it completely overlooked Novell GroupWise.
techweb.com ----------------------- March 31, 1997, Issue: 656 Dropping In On Dr. Gig for a Byte Communications week
From the article: One of the crocs leaped and I kicked it in the jaw. Dr. Gig was telling me that Novell's appointment of a new CEO has not quelled speculation that it might be sold. The most recently rumored suitors are Oracle and Netscape, or a partnership of both.
