Thanks Charles: now I know where to look for this information in the future. And very informative it was too. I did some back-of-the-envelope calculations, and got the following astounding numbers from the disclosures you referenced. Assuming that the stock price remains constant, and that all options are eventually exercised by holders, and that the companies purchase the shares to honor these options on the open market:

As of June 30, 1998 Microsoft Sun
Option Shares Outstanding 449M 26.4M
Weighted Average Exercise $23.87 $22.28
Current Price (Aug 21, 1999) $82.875 $71.56
----------------------------------------------
Liability on exercise $26.31B $1.3B

Anyone care to correct this, or is this correct? If the stock price actually rises, things get much worse.

This is not intended as investment advice, run your own numbers.
