A few years ago I took some courses in drug and alcohol counseling. According to one text book, the facilitator (me) was to strive to "validate our client's personhood." When I asked the professor what this meant, he shrugged and laughed and said how the hell should he know. This was the beginning of the end of my short career in counseling.
