fooey! if there is such an extensive 'second and third source of supply available,' as you claim, then pray tell me/us WHY our government still maintains a strategic stockpile list of things THEY are keeping on hand just to minimally keep the military functional and have since prior to WWII if memory serves.

might be interesting to learn what the feds think is 'stockpiled' that we don't have stockpiled. anyone know where to find the current list?

foobert, have you EVER retooled a milling machine already flawlessly making another item, in your entire life to a new set of milling specs when you formerly made widgets and now you are being contracted to now mill gadgets?
under emergency circumstances?
with limited personal or company resources? including HUMAN resources?
with no costing per item experience to determine pricing?
and price controls are in place anyhow?
coupled with uncertain but definitely delayed payment for product/services?
to retool in some industry so precisely built to tolerance as the sealed bearing industry?

i'd be willing to wager you don't even know how dependent your life is NOW upon precision bearings!
let alone bearing races!
bearing lubricants!
bearing presses to assemble bearings!
engraving of part #s onto the bearings for identification purposes!
testing of bearings!
manualinspection of bearings!
training of new manual inspectors!
daycare for those new inspectors!
health insurance for those new inspectors!
competitive pay packages for those new inspectors!
wrapping of bearings!
supply of boxes for shipping bearings!
insertion of bearings INTO boxes for shipping!
actual transporting of finished bearings!
contact with your bearing buyer!
the bearings counting support services from your own 'office gal!'
oh, and don't forget the bearings receiving department accounting 'gal!'
plus the bearings vendor payable gal on the buyers' end

and all of the above is totally dependent upon:

ELECTRICITY
which will be in abysmally short supply?

yes, as the old children's story used to read:

For wont of a nail the shoe was lost.
For wont of a shoe the horse was lost.
For wont of a horse the rider was lost.
For wont of a rider the war was was lost.
For wont of a nail the war was lost!

"For wont of bearing the war was lost."

bearing up well will be just ONE of life's little worries come 01/01/00
