TUSTIN, Calif., Aug 12, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) --
PairGain(R)Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: PAIR), a leader in broadband
access systems, today announced its Avidia(R) System has been certified
to Telcordia (formerly Bellcore) NEBS Level 3 compliance, the highest
conformance criteria for telecommunications equipment (the Avidia
System is also listed under UL1950, safety of information technology
equipment). NEBS compliance is specified in the Telcordia SR-3580
specification, which defines three levels of safety and operability
under worse case conditions. Conformance to NEBS Level 3 is a
requirement for products selling into RBOCs (Regional Bell Operating
Companies) and other major carriers and provides North American
customers with the highest level of assurance of product operability.

"We're extremely pleased that the Avidia System has passed all criteria
for NEBS Level 3 certification," said Ahmet Tuncay, vice president of
product management at PairGain. "This is a major milestone for
PairGain, because it enables the company to market the Avidia System to
all major US telephone companies."

The NEBS criteria are important for demonstrating the safety and
survivability of a product while in use in telephone networks.
Certification involves continued operability testing of the system
under a number of extreme environmental conditions. For selected tests,
a single Avidia System 8000 chassis was configured to support 216
full-rate DMT ADSL or G.lite users. The Avidia System met or exceeded
all requirements throughout the rigorous testing cycle. The Avidia
System can support up to 648 ADSL or G.lite users in asingle bay, which
is by far the industry's highest density.

NEBS compliance is an essential criteria for North American telephone
companies evaluating the suitability of products for use in their
networks. The Avidia System is currently being evaluated and deployed
by a number of carriers, who are now assured of the product's full NEBS
Level 3 compliance.

The Avidia System

The Avidia System is a multi-service platform that enables carriers
to immediately deploy next-generation services, including G.Lite and
full-rate ADSL, from a single platform. It is based on a distributed
ATM switching fabric that provides adaptation for IP and frame relay
traffic.

The Avidia System supports G.lite, full-rate DMT ADSL, SDSL, HDSL,
HDSL2, T1, IP voice and frame relay services, in addition to ATM over
ADSL and Ethernet frames over SDSL. The system features superior reach,
more than three times greater than comparable products, with unequaled
capacity of 1,296 ports in a single bay. The Avidia System can be
configured as a DSLAM, access server or LAN extension concentrator and
is ideal for high-speed Internet access, telecommuting and private
network applications. Only the Avidia System delivers the service
flexibility, port density, deployment options and quality of service
(QoS) guarantees necessary for widespread broadband network access, an
ideal combination for independent service providers, CLECs, RBOCs,
ISPs, PTTs and private enterprise owners worldwide.
