You are thinking of Network Computers or NCs. The network appliance is a very different animal - it is a dedicated machine to do one job but do it exceptionally well and at a very low cost both from an installation and maintenance standpoint. Examples are appliances for web caching, firewalls, and small business file server work.

CPQ has a slight lead in this category but DELL has been working closely with Intel on an integrated design and will not be left at the gate.

Most people looking at the appliance market see it as some incremental revenue and some cannibalization of existing server sales, but on balance probably not a negative revenue impact.

Expect CPQ and DELL to be big leaders in this space, HP and IBM slower to get there. I can't imagine why this would be a negative for DELL.
