It's possibly important to understand that tragedy was a religious ceremony (to Dionysus) so it is unlikely to appeal to you or me the way it did to the Greeks. Sophocles was careful to remove horror from the stage (Oedipus blinded himself off stage). Aristotle explained all of this.
Horror is unbearable to me. I cannot stand to see anything suffering. Reenactment on the stage or film makes me furious, because I cannot prevent or intervene. Therefore it never purges my emotions of pity and fear, and leaves me frustrated and angry.
