Right idea, wrong company.

Ascend should have bought Ipsilon (or invested cash, since they're private). Ipsilon's flow-based routing is the perfect complement to Ascend's dynamic bandwidth allocation. There's nothing like bringing up two ISDN B-channels while videoconferencing or an Internet phone conference, only to have your throughput limited by the quagmire we call the Internet. Unfortunately, before everyone does videoconferencing, you need the capability to handle that type of traffic on the Internet. Only Ipsilon is capable of doing that (eventually, Stratacom/Cisco too). Routing will buy you nothing. And Ipsilon easily surpasses 5 million pps.

Whoever ends up with Ipsilon will be the one that competes with Cisco.
