A great deal of the grotesque overspending of the Reagan years was in the expansion of defense spending, and much of the money spent there had little to do with defense (how much money was, and is, tossed away on "consultants" - overpaid sinecures for retired brass?).

If the arms race was what force the collapse of the Soviet Union, this might be considered money well spent. If the Soviet economy was already in a tailspin and headed for collapse in any event, it was a huge and destructive waste.

I have yet to see any really credible evidence that it was Reagan's arms spending and "refusal to compromise" that forced the collapse of the Soviet Union. I would like to hear Joan's opinion on this one someday, as she knows more about Russia than the rest of us combined....
