"The colonial powers were out to earn money and gain geopolitical advantage. Civilization had very little to do with it. Land, Labor and Loot. Those are the reasons for all government "sponsored" colonization. All other reasons are really one of those three in disguise. "Civilization" is a code word for cheap (or slave) labor.
