So which CPU do you buy? First, AMD has to ramp up their production line to produce the Athlons. At the same time, they must produce K6-2 and K6-3 laptop and desktop CPUs. This is discussed further in our article, Can AMD Deliver the K-7 Athlon ? .
In all likelihood, you will not be able to buy an Athlon until this Fall, which is also when we will see the Intel Camino 820 chipset and the Coppermine Pentium IIIs arriving. While a Coppermine PIII may only have a 5% performance increase over current Pentium IIIs, combined with the 4X AGP slot, Rambus DRAM, and 135 MHz system bus of the Camino chipset, any advantage the Athlon currently has will not last long (current Athlons use a 2X AGP port).
