Counties Get Set for Y2K << In 144 days, as the final hours tick away before the year 2000, a dozen government officials will descend 24½ feet below the Onondaga County Civic Center, prepared for a disaster. The group will spend New Year's Eve inside a 30-by-60-foot emergency operations center in the sub-basement. Equipped with backup radios, a satellite phone and a generator, the emergency team will be prepared to stay in shifts for days or weeks into the new year. Above ground, Onondaga County Department of Transportation crews will spend the night roaming the streets in trucks stocked with up to 175 temporary stop signs.
