Dear Subscribers:
In this era when it seems so many people are happy to allow the gradual erosion of their Constitutional rights in exchange for a cradle-to-grave Big Brother “security”, we are very happy to see companies in the private sector offering responsible, rational, logical solutions to problems that might otherwise require unenforceable government-mandated restrictions.
Specifically, we are talking about the ongoing battle to pass legislation that would restrict free speech on the Internet, ostensibly to “protect the children”. Now perhaps we are reading a little too much into this, but historically this type of legislation has proved to be a “slippery slope” and once citizens allow their government to legislate morality, as it were, the ultimate destination is an oblivion of strangulating regulations.
As much as we are opposed to attempts to restrict speech on such a widespread and ultimately non-police-able medium as the Internet, we believe that each individual person has the responsibility and the right to determine what type of content is acceptable for themselves and their families, and act accordingly. Much in the same manner as parents forbid their children to view certain television programs or read certain magazines, they also have the duty to keep their children from viewing whatever material they may consider to be objectionable. Our subject company for this newsletter gives parents the power to do just that, without having to be in the room reviewing every click of the mouse. The Company's products are powerful enough to satisfy even the most straightlaced bureaucrat, but flexible enough to allow parents to specify access for the whole family.
The name of the company is BrowseSafe.com, Inc.
The Company //////////////////////////////////// BrowseSafe.com develops and markets an Internet-based website rating and categorization service that gives parents the power to easily limit their children's access to objectionable material on the Internet. Furthermore, the review and rating process uses both computers and actual human beings. This makes for a superior form of site rating, as other existing software solutions relying solely on computerized review merely search for objectionable words in the web site text. With BrowseSafe, sites that contain no "offensive" words but do display pictures that many consider objectionable- for example, pornography- can be restricted by parents. This is a much more effective review and rating system and has been quite well received by parents and industry partners alike.
The company's idea is to review web sites based on thirty-five different criteria, including pornography, profanity, drugs, alcohol and gambling. The company has already reviewed over 150 million pages, using a combination of computerized content “spiders” and human reviewers. Sites are then categorized according to their content, and parents and school administrators then have the ability to adjust levels of content for different ages of users. (see “software” below).
Browsesafe.com completed a name change following a merger into a public company. The new trading symbol is OTCBB:PGPG. The stock has been trading in the $1.75 to 2.25 range.
Software //////////////////////////////////// The marketing emphasis of BrowseSafe is to make available all of the good things available on the World Wide Web. Each site will be personally reviewed by staff members to insure safety for all customers who use the product. Users can be restricted from chat rooms, news groups and/or specifically adult oriented sites, pornographic or semi-pornographic sites, sites that use explicit and off-color language, gambling sites, and occult, firearms, tobacco or alcohol related sites. Once on-line, the users are presented with three specific methods for web browsing- each incorporates specific browsing opportunities depending on the general age of the user. These are pre-set (but adjustable by the master user) and are as follows:
BrowseSafe comes pre-configured for various maturity levels, grouped into three basic modules: PlanetWow for kids, PlanetCool for teens, and PlanetHome for parents and administrators. Each module is able to access levels of web content traditionally considered acceptable for members of that age group. A fourth module, PlanetBiz, is being developed for businesses. This also will offer three modes of browsing for businesses and will offer an unlimited number of employees access to safe browsing. The business owner would allow employees access to the predetermined levels of browsing depending on their position and need for access to the varying sites on the web. Restricting employee access to controversial Internet material is an unfortunate necessity in our litigious society.
All of the above mentioned versions of BrowseSafe, while pre-set by the company, are fully adjustable and can easily be configured to access whatever content the master user (parent or system administrator) deems appropriate. Furthermore, all settings are password protected and can't be hacked by ambitious kids or employees.
BrowseSafe Technology //////////////////////////////////// BrowseSafe has developed and tested the only unique and worry-free successful Internet security program available today. It has strategically positioned its technology for resale through ISP's who have already cornered the Internet subscriber market and with educational institutions that are demanding effective and worry-free access to the world wide web.
The custom browser utilizes a server to control the sites that the user can visit. The browser is “hard wired” to proxy directly to BrowseSafe servers that maintain a list of PlanetGood browsing sites. Before a URL can load, the custom browser must directly link to or proxy to the server control to be screened before browsing any domain name. The server solution provides a transparent way for the user to have the most up-to-date possibilities for browsing domain sites—no files of updated sites would have to be downloaded to the user's machine.
If a user encounters a site that has not yet been reviewed by BrowseSafe (a difficult task, considering the reach of the company) the user is immediately prompted to submit it for review for content and be added to the BrowseSafe database. BrowseSafe typically responds to these requests within one day.
The default browser homepage, PlanetGood.net, includes a search mechanism, “Safe Search”, similar to “Yahoo” for all users to access information quickly. Of course, this will contain only site information for safe PlanetGood browsing and will automatically function only to the degree relating to the browser module in use.
Competition //////////////////////////////////// There are currently several companies marketing Internet browsing filters. Among the most recognizable are Cyberpatrol, Surfwatch, CyberSitter and NetNanny. The majority of these solutions are based around context sensitive pattern matching, which is also referred to as “semantic logic”. Surfwatch, for instance, works by identifying objectionable phrases and word patterns within an Internet site and blocking access to that site. Sometimes, as pointed out in the May 10, 1999 edition of Time magazine, perfectly safe sites are blocked and objectionable material can leak through. The article said that “…many other filtering systems…dumbly (apply) a list of forbidden words against the content of any site.” and went on to say that this method works like “a blunt instrument”. The developers of BrowseSafe believe that objectionable material does leak through with other filters and point to a study by Consumer Reports which found that from 22 objectionable sites tested using leading filters at least four and as many as 22 sites were able to be viewed. With the rapid changes to the world wide web, it is difficult for current competitors to maintain a complete list of adult sites in a manner that is user-friendly for parents. Besides that, a reasonably adept grade-school kid can disable any competitor's systems. BrowseSafe provides the safest choice for the consumer with protection through its server-side filter.
In May 1997, Consumer Reports Magazine tested the following Internet security programs. The results were as follows: CyberPatrol ineffective in 6 of 22 sites. Cybersitter ineffective in 8 of 22 sites. NetNanny ineffective in 22 of 22 sites. SurfWatch ineffective in 4 of 22 sites. IE Ratings ineffective in 19 of 22 sites.
Where other text-based, easily-defeated software programs have failed, BrowseSafe's proprietary technology will succeed. This industry is ready for a solution like BrowseSafe.
News //////////////////////////////////// This news release was issued today, concerning a significant distribution agreement with one of the world's largest distributors of Christian retail products.
BROWSESAFE.COM ANNOUNCES SYMBOL CHANGE AND NEW DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT
Trading Symbol (OTC BB: PGPG )
INDIANAPOLIS, IN. August 10, 1999- BrowseSafe.com, formerly Motioncast Television Corp. of America (MCTV), has changed its trading symbol to PGPG and has also been issued a new CUSIP (# 116-641-101).
In addition, BrowseSafe.com is pleased to announce that a distribution agreement has been signed with Riverside Distributors, one of the world's largest distributors of products into the Christian Retail Market. This market is estimated to be in excess of $3,000,000,000 (three billion dollar) in the US alone. Riverside has a worldwide customer base that exceeds 10,000 retailers that offer a variety of products to millions of families. Riverside Distributors have marketed these types of products and services for over 50 years.
Over one year ago, BrowseSafe strategically partnered with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT –news), and Netscape, which is owned by America On Line (NYSE:AOL-news), to distribute their popular web browsers with PlanetGood- Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Unlike competitive products, PlanetGood is neither a blocker nor a censor program, but a full featured Internet browser that allows adults the freedom to choose what types of sites their teens and younger children visit as well as the sites they visit themselves. Uniquely, PlanetGood is the best solution to the market to prevent users from viewing unwanted web sites.
Management is also in the process of filing with the NASD to be a Fully Reporting Issuer. To learn more about BrowseSafe.com (OTC BB:PGPG) visit the website at browsesafe.com.
The Market //////////////////////////////////// BrowseSafe has developed a service that all Internet Service Providers (ISP's) can make available to their customers. BrowseSafe has also developed a professional, direct marketing campaign to target ISP's nationwide while providing sales literature for ISP's to market to their customers. This service, while being profitable to BrowseSafe will also enhance the revenue of ISP's. With over 6,000 ISP's nationwide serving over 15,000,000 non-AOL customers, the market potential for BrowseSafe's current niche is over $500 million in revenues annually.
The current trend of both PC and Internet usage in the home is on the rise. Currently about 43% of American homes own a personal computer, of which 80% have a modem—28 million of these are connected to the internet. It is also predicted that the price of PC's will decline downward to $500-$700 by early 1999 in an effort to increase the PC market penetration in homes to 70-80%. For the first time in history, the consumer and the home market will overtake the business market in the total number of computers.
These statistics are only considering the U.S. market. The International Data Corporation (IDC) states, “Worldwide, a population explosion on the Web is under way, with the number of Web users growing from 50.2 million in 1997 to 174.5 million in 2001.” It is expected that total web users will grow to over 1 billion by the year 2008.
A June 1998 Jupiter Communications Study showed that 68% of parents are concerned about their children being exposed to potentially harmful material on the Internet. This same study showed that “53% of parents are willing to pay an additional fee for safe on-line environments.”
In summary, BrowseSafe offers its investors the following advantages:
1) It has developed a tangible and functional software product, not just a concept. 2) PlanetGood gives complete freedom to parents to control browsing content for any age group without requiring ongoing maintenance. 3) BrowseSafe has the hardware and software infrastructure in place keep up with the growth of the Web. 4) Competing products don't work effectively and are difficult to set up. 5) A large market potential in the fastest growing industry.
Sales Projections //////////////////////////////////// BrowseSafe projects sales this year of $281,016, $5.1 Million in the second year and $13.9 Million in year three. This equates to .04 %, .29 % and .69 % market share, respectively, based on the current number of non-America Online Internet users. We feel that these are conservative numbers, taking into account the efficacy of the software, the need for such a product, and the enthusiastic reception the software has received thus far.
Worldwide Application //////////////////////////////////// Browsesafe can be adapted to twenty-one different languages including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. Actually,
