Moment of truth close at hand for Ericsson

Ericssons continued existence as an independent company with a full range of products in fixed and mobile telephony, data communication and Internet is threatened. The telecom group has such large problems that a merger with a competitor has presumably come up in discussions by main owners Industrivärden and AB Investor.

Sources in Finland suggest that Ericsson is interested in an alliance with Nokia. A partnership of this sort would combine Ericssons strength and market positions in network systems with Nokias muscles in mobile phones and the consumer market. It would also solve Ericssons management problems.
ôThe recent firing of Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson and the temporary solution for leadership of the company suggests that Ericssons main owners Investor and Industrivärden are preparing a structural deal," writes DI stock analyst Benny Svensson.
However, the main owners have reportedly decided to give Ericsson a final chance to prove its mettle as an independent firm. However, that option would entail a restructuring, which would allow Ericsson to concentrate on certain business areas and reduce runaway R&D costs.
Ericsson could eventually sell its mobile phone unit, for example, and focus on mobile systems for voice and data communications. Another option would be to spin off its fixed telephone operation. (DI)
