Title: Crackdown on Christians looms 'after campaign of
conversions'
Author:
Publication: South China Morning Post
Date: August 10, 1999

Christian missionaries are being blamed for eroding Nepal's
Hindu
identity, with pressure growing on the Government to take action
against them. "A systematic campaign is underway to convert one
million Hindus into Christians by the end of 2000," deputy Ashok
Nath
Tiwari told the National Assembly.

Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai expressed shock at the
way
poor Hindus were being told their children would get education
and
good jobs abroad if they converted to Christianity.

"I hope the missionaries will put an end to this practice on
their
own," Mr Bhattarai, a moderate Hindu, said. His statement is
being
interpreted as a hint of stern action if the missionaries do not
comply with his appeal.

King Birendra and Nepal's status as the Hindu kingdom are highly
respected by many Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Atal
Behari
Vajpayee.

Missionaries have been taking advantage of liberal conditions
created
by Nepal's democratic constitution of 1990. The constitution
recognises the country has followers of other religions,
although it
made conversion illegal.
