Hey MNI, I bet you'll just love this quote by would-be Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice:

...There are other friends and allies that are, perhaps, in even greater and more urgent need of attention. Turkey, just as an example. Turkey is a country that is absolutely critical to the future of an extraordinarily important region of the world--the Caspian Basin and the Balkans--its really a linchpin of so much of the important geography of Europe and Asia. What is going on in Turkey is a kind of struggle for where Turkey is going to look for its identity. Is it going to look west toward Europe, or is it going to turn inward? Is it going to remain the best example of secular, non-theocratic rule, but still Islam? Or is it going to look like fundamentalist Islam? What kind of magnet, what kind of platform, is it going to provide for places like Kazakstan and Azerbaijan that are going through that same identity crisis? And when the Germans decide to say to the Turks, "Whatever you do, you will never be European. Don't even think about the European Community." That is a horrible, horrible strategic mistake. The United States is the country that must fill that breach.

My view about the 'US must fill that breach'? Merely a geopolitical quick fix! I think the US should muscle in a little further on their EU partners and make them face their geographical accountability.
