more than a year ago the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the possibility of an ASND-CSCC merger - see techstocks.com
Excerpt from the chronicle:

But Mory Ejabat, Ascend's chief executive and president, while admitting the two companies talk regularly, said they have not talked about merging.

"We have a lot of common customers and we're friends,'' Ejabat said. Every time someone sees us talking they say we are going to merge. At the same time, that does not mean we are not talking about a joint project.''
Despite the disclaimer it might seem that this was something under consideration for a long while. The time did not become ripe until CSCC stumbled and the market punished it accordingly, IMO.
