I think the War Between the States was the turning point. Freeing the slaves was not the primary issue of the war. It was the principle that States had the right of self determination. By an economic/political alliance with the North the Federal Government raised an army and put down the States of the South who were seceding, taking their rights of self determination from them by force of arms. And then this country started drifting back to a central ruling power and tyranny. Something the Constitution was supposed to prevent.
